Welcome
Welcome to the GP2X Standards site.

GP2X Standards brings you suggested guidelines for your GP2X projects.
These guidelines are the result of discussion with developers around the GP2X dev scene.

The site currently holds ideas taken from www.gp32x.com & www.gp32spain.com, although suggestions are welcome from any of the community sites worldwide. The site also hosts ideas that have come about to make the general experience of using the GP2X system easier & more enjoyable.

You can use the contact link on the left side navigation bar, or use the provided forum to send in ideas & requests.
As this site is for use by all the communities, any ideas & suggestions will be open to voting.

Thank you for visiting..
Apologies
NewsHi, Poké here. I'm posting here for two purposes;
Firstly Project Infinity has had a complete overhaul and relaunched yesterday.
Secondly.... this upgrade to PI managed to break GP2XStandards... so after a wee bit of database hacking I fixed the offending problem. Welcome back! :)

Standards & Ideas in Action..
NewsJust thought I'd bring you upto date about which suggested standards & ideas from the site have been adopted & put into practice so far.

The suggested File System will of course be used by Orkies Package Manager.

The Mini Manuals idea has been implemented with amazing results into the latest version of GMenu2X . It's also been updated & improved with new ideas conceived on the standards forum.

The suggestion of programs being able to use the sound level of the last run program has also been implemented within the newest version of GMenu2X .
To take advantage of this feature with your programmes, you just need to make sure that they don't reset the sound level at start up.

Big thanks to everyone involved in these & please keep up the good work :)

New Idea..
NewsEDIT: This idea's a work in progress & is changing all the time. Check the Easy2X link in the right hand side Navigation menu for the latest news.

I posted a new idea on this thread (page 3) & thought I'd copy it here to make sure that everyone got a say in it. Here's what it said..

I've been working on a new idea which I think could be relevant to this thread & would appreciate some feedback from you guys if you'll be kind enough :)

About a week or so ago, I was testing Orkies beta package manager & found that he had forgotten to set up the rom folder for gngeo2x to the standards one. I decided to make a package for rage2x & realised that I could use this to alter the config file at the same time to point to the correct folder within the standards file system. While I was at it.. I thought that I might as well change some other options within the config file, to the one's that most people seem to use anyway.

I enabled the sound, made the list show only the games in the roms folder etc. (you get the jist).

This gave me an even better idea about how to handle the packages. Instead of one package that set up everything (I know some people really don't like that idea), two packages would give the user an extra choice:

  1. People can use the GP2X system as they do right now, with no loss of freedom what so ever.

  1. People can use the package manager to install the programs however the dev sets it up, but will have to stick to the standards placement within the file system. This is a good option for people like me who prefer to help devs out by bug testing software, but can't be arsed with the boring part of unzipping etc. (will save a lot of time when testing out new software).

  1. People can do the second option & then download the extras package for the program. The extras package will automatically install & set up a frontend for the program (if there is one), create a gmenu2x short cut, icon & any extra parameters (if it's installed), change the config files of the programs & basically give the user a completely set up, easy to use & hassle free system (just add roms ;)).

The last option will give the user less freedom than the other two options, but it will also stop new users with no interest in tweaking etc. from populating the forums with the same old questions. Those users that prefer to use the 2X just for gaming & media (rather than the real fun stuff ;)) will probably love this option.

I can't see any downsides to using a system like this as it doesn't interfere with the current system in the slightest. Unless I'm missing something?

Anyway, that's the thought that's been floating around my head for the past week or so & maybe if this was implemented, we wouldn't have to turn people away from the system any more? yes.. I've done that too I'm afraid :(

Easy2X anyone?

Internet Going Down :(
NewsJust a quick message to anyone that's interested, about the fact that I could be without an internet connection for a week or two.
I'll still be able to log on now & again at friends houses etc. but I won't be able to keep an eye on things half as much as I would like to.

On the plus side though.. I'll be able to spend more time making packages up for Orkies package manager (new & improved version coming soon) & I should be able to get back to working more on the suggested standards, rather than trying to keep the site upto date.

Feel free to keep posting your suggestions etc. & I hope to be back online A.S.A.P :D

p.s PokeParadox is being kind enough to look after things while I'm away. Anything that's important enough to need an immediate response, can be directed at him though the sites messaging system :)

Sites Complete..
NewsAs far as I'm concerned the site is pretty much feature complete.
Apart from new graphics needed on certain parts of the site, the site should be capable of doing the job that it was made to do.

One feature that I havn't told anybody about just yet (but you might have seen) is the Set In Stone mark.
As most of the standards on this site are currently a work in progress, I decided that it would be a good idea to implement some way for developers to know when a standard is stable enough to use within their projects.

SetInStone
(If you need more info on the mark, then just click on the image)

e.g. The file system has been granted this mark, as the Package Manager that Orkie is currently working on (more info here!) will need a stable file system to work. It's these types of programs that will use the suggested standards for what they were designed for :D

Hopefully now that the site is good, I can actually start to post news & get the word out about the site among all the different GP2X communities.
Orkies Package Manager being released should go a long way to bringing new users to the site.

p.s. I've set up a new forum for any remarks on the file system here!

A big thank you to the people who have signed up to the site & who are actively involved in shaping the suggested standards.

Package Uploading..
ModsLast mod I promise ;)

Orkie from the gp32x forums is currently working on a GP2X Package Manager that will make the installation & updating of programs easier on the system.

As these packages will make it much easier for people & they can be made by anyone, this site will be the first to play host to them. Of course this means that the site needed an easy way for users to upload & download the packages, so two links have been added to the Navigation panel on the left.

The Submit Packages link is only useable by members of the site after signing in. This not only allows the uploading of packages by all members, but each member can delete any of the packages that they have uploaded at any time.

The  Packages link is usable by everyone. There is no sign in needed to download the packages.

Enjoy :D

Newsletter..
ModsAdded (another) new mod to the site tonight that allows all members to sign up & receive a basic newsletter.
This will be used to inform members & make it easier for you to keep up to date with the newest forum threads, suggestions & votes.

You don't need to enter your username & email address again, as it uses the name & address that you signed up for the site with. All that's required is for you to press the button underneath the Public Poll panel on the right hand side of the screen :D

Enhancing the site..
ModsIn an effort to make the site a more useful resource for the communities, I've implemented a couple more mods for you all to play with ;)

The site now has a suggestions page (Suggestions )..
Any ideas that members come up with for new standards can be posted in there. The other members can then leave comments & add their thoughts about the idea, before it's approved, noted or rejected etc.
Once a suggestion has enough interest, it can then be moved to a forum for a real debate ;).

An RSS Parser has been added (RSS Feeds)..
This adds quick lists to the front page of the site with the latest news from multiple sources (currently www.gp32x.com & Project Infinity). It also adds a full page to the site with the 3 latest full posts from each of the sites.
All Update to the latest posts once every hour or so :)

I've also added an IRC client to the site (DevChat IRC)..
This lets the user log on to the #gp2xdev IRC channel on irc.efnet.org & use the inbuilt IRC chat client without leaving the site. Very handy if you travel a lot, or often find yourself using other peoples computers with no IRC client.

It's currently set to connect to #gp2xdev by default, but can be used to connect to any IRC channel by the user.

I'll improve the page later on to make it fit in better with the site & I'll also add info to the page (if possible?), including the addresses of some other useful IRC channels.

I might actually get this site finished some time soon :D

New Voting System
ModsI was a bit put off with the fact that users had to sign up for the site before being able to vote on certain things.
I'm going to try a new mod for the site that will allow 1 vote per I.P address.

The new mod will allow guests to vote on some of the more minor standards & idea's without the hassle of signing up. The more important standards should still require signing up for though to prevent tampering etc.

If the site doesn't work for a while, then you know that I've done something wrong.
Wish me luck ;)

EDIT: The mods working fine, except for the fact that it seems to use the same settings as the members only one if they're both running at the same time. Never mind as it will still come in useful for judging public opinions :)

Site's now live :D
NewsJust wanted to say a big thanks to the people who have either signed up for the site, or have publicly shown their support within the different forums.

I also wanted to give a quick update of what's changed on the site since it went live yesterday..

The Start+R+L standard was changed as people thought that it was a little too restrictive. Instead of having to press the keys within a certain order, the program should except the keys in whatever order the user presses. Forum!

DawnOfTheRent came up with a good idea of how to improve on the mini manuals. I'll implement this when I can find the spare time (hopefully before the weekend). Forum!

Godmil requested a standard to be submitted of all programs using the same sound level when starting up. This will help solve the common problem of people nearly loosing their hearing while using headphones ;).
This is currently a work in progress. Forum!

Redeeman suggested a standard for developers to add a command line parameter for NOT relaunching the menu. gp32x.com/Forum!
This is currently a work in progress. Forum!

Rooster sent me a message asking that the PDF with the standards on be easier for people to download. I've added a direct download link to the file within both the sidebar & the topbar of the site :).
The PDF is currently still in Beta mode & will be done fully when most standards have been agreed upon. If anyone is willing to translate this into any other language than English, could you please PM me or post in the comments.. thanks.

Not too bad for a days work I don't think ;)

Hello all..
News
The sites nearing completion & is just about ready to go live.

As there wasn't enough information to make the site only about suggested standards, you'll find that we've tried to incorparate other features to make it a more useful resource for the communities.

The site hosts links to some useful sites for GP2X users. This is to give a single location for people to come to, when they've forgotten the address of an important GP2X site.

The Photo Album feature, has an album just for GP2X Users to upload photos of themselves. It's always nice to be able to put a name to a face ;)

The Photo & Download sections are currently open to the public, although this may change later on if bandwidth becomes a problem.

Most of what you need is available for everyone without signing up for the site. There are some extra features for those who wish to sign up though..

The ability to submit Links, News & Photo's will be added to your left side navigation panel.

The news archives will be searchable.

The site will be themeable per user.

You will also be able to vote after signing up.

Feel free to look around & we hope that you enjoy the site :D

p.s We used pictures, links & screenshots etc. from all over the internet as we were rushing to get the site finished (credit given when possible). If anybody wants us to remove anything from the site, then please get in touch or let us know in the comments section.
